HILLSDALE CLUB LAUNCHES SUMMER LEAGUE PROGRAM
The 2010 version of the Hillsdale Fairground Horseshoe Club
Summer League program opening night attracted 22 pitchers from the Hillsdale
area. Part of the 22 pitchers are seen in this photo, Jack Erwin, League

of the box. This is Jack's second year as League Coordinator. The League plays
every Thursday evening starting at 6:00 p.m. if the weather permits. League
participants pitch four, 30 shoe, games each League night. The opening night was
a warm-up to get everyone informed about the procedures and scoring methods use
under the handicap method scoring system.

the pitchers abilities to score. Morris was the Most Improved Pitcher for the
last two league seasons.

SUMMER LEAGUE TO OPEN APRIL 29, 2010

Jack Erwin, Summer League Coordinator, reports that
the 2010 League will start on April 29 at the Hillsdale County Fairground
Courts. Sign up is
at 6:00 p.m. each Thursday Night (weather permitting) through the18 week
schedule. Last years league had the largest number of pitchers since the club
was
organized in 2003 with an average participation of over 20 each league nigh. A
handicap scoring method is use so that anyone can be competitive in the
competitive
league program. Pitchers pitch four 30 shoe games each week with the results
reported on this Website weekly. New league pitchers are welcome
with the opportunity to join at any time during the summer schedule. Horseshoe
pitching is something that anyone can participation in regardless of age
or
ability to make ringers. Men pitch from the 40 foot distance with men over 70
having the option of moving up to the 30 foot distance. Women and those
those under 18 pitch from the 30 line too. It's a great way to get some good
physical exercise to keep fit! A handicap form of scoring is use to
make all pitchers equal in ability

The
2009 Annual League Doubles Tournament featured 11 teams fielding 22 players that
participated in the 16 week Summer League program. This year's Doubles
used a 30 shoe, handicap scoring, format with teams loosing two games being
dropped from play each round. The final two teams played for the first and
second place in the tournament. The winning team was Helen Weller
and Tim Rhoades
with team Barry Hinkle and Danny
Ringman coming in second best. Both won cash
awards paid by the Hillsdale Fairground Horseshoe Club
with 25 members. An average of over 22 attended each night of the 16 week
Schedule. This summer's league, coordinated by Jack Erwin, had the largest
membership since the club was organized in 2003. Congrats to the winning team

PREPARE COURTS FOR NINE TOURNAMENTS DURING FAIR WEEK
Thursday nigh September 17 was a busy at the Fairground Horseshoe Courts. A
crew of members headed up by Jack Erwin, Club Coordinator, included Marv Wampler,
Barry Hinkle, Ron Deforest, Larry Ringman, Danny Ringman, Brett Ringman, Travis
Ringman, Ken Schmucker and Bill Tedrick made several improvements on the six
court set-up. The back-stops received a new coat of paint, and all the front
court frames were replaced with new lumber. Courts were spruced up with sand ready
for the fair week tournaments
HILLSDALE FAIRGROUND HORSESHOE CLUB 2009 SUMMER LEAGUE SHOWS INCREASE PARTICIPATION
With eight weeks of League play the
average attendance is well over 20 pitchers per league night. The Club
Coordinator, Jack Erwin, reports that the highest number of pitchers was 26 on
week 6. The Summer League is open to anyone interested in organized
horseshoe pitching. The Summer League is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. each
Thursday evening, weather permitting, according to Jack. New members can join
the League any Thursday night at the Hillsdale County Fairground Courts. A
count-all scoring methods is use to allow anyone to be competitive regardless of
their ability to throw ringers. Members 70 and over can pitch from the 30 foot
distance as well as youth under 18 and women. Helen Weller and T.A. Rhoades, of
Jonesville are current female members. Men under 70 pitch from the 40 foot
distance. After seven weeks of play, Tim Rhoades, Jonesville, has the best win
record of 64% over 27 games. Ron Deforest of rural Jonesville has a win record
of 62% through 26 games. Ken Schmucker, North Adams, is in third place

JACK ERWIN NAMED NEW HILLSDALE FAIRGROUND HORSESHOE CLUB COORDINATOR

Jack Erwin is the Hillsdale Fairground Horseshoe Club Coordinator, replacing Bill Tedrick who who served as Club Coordinator five years. As Club Coordinator, Erwin coordinate the club's Summer League and manage the horseshoe tournaments during the Hillsdale County Fair. The 17 week Summer League involves some 25 local club members usually starting in late April and ending in September, according to Erwin. Coordinating the Horseshoe Tournaments at the Hillsdale County Fair featuring nine tournaments during five days of the fair. The 2008 fair tournaments involved some 167 pitchers including several from Ohio and other counties in Michigan.
Jack is dedicated to promoting organized horseshoe participation. He currently plays in both the Summer and Winter Leagues as a member of the Jackson County Horseshoe Club and serves as Treasurer of the Hillsdale Club. Jack has been active in the Fairground Club since it was organized in 2003. He owns and manages a bee keeping operation near Concord, Michigan. He and his wife, Dena, have a major beekeeping display at Hillsdale County Fair located in the Horticultural Building near the horseshoe courts on the fairground.
