SUMMER LEAGUE OPENS TO NEW LOOK AND FULL HOUSE

Thanks to great leadership and work from a several Jackson Club members, the 2010 Summer Leagued opened to a New Look court-wise. The refurbishing of all the 18 courts to repainting the League Score Boards, adding new seats at both ends of the courts greeted the 16 Summer League Teams for the first week of league play on May 4th. Jack Craw and Dave Thurn were the movers leading the renovation work.

Some 93 enthusiastic league members launched a 15 week summer league journey that will determine a first-half Team League Winner, a second-half team winner and finally the overall Champions of the 2010 Summer League.

Tom Williams, Club secretary and League Coordinator, as well as processing  league statistics featured on our website on the  Results Page. Individual member statistics as well as Team statistics are updated weekly throughout the full summer program. These team and individual statistics are use to identify a covey of individual member awards presented at the League Banquet and business meeting in September.

The current League Winners from the 2009 play, Williams Coffee Service Teams, will be the team to challenge for the 2010 league championship. Carl Rennel, Club President, is coordinating the club overall activities again this year. A new look and a great set of league teams and team captains set the foundation for a excellent summer league program. The number of new league pitchers from the younger generations is a good indication of the future vigor of the Jackson Club and summer league seasons. Each Team is sponsored by a local business or individual.

GETTING READ FOR THE SUMMER LEAGUE

Work crews have completed a major up-grading of our 18 courts this spring. The concrete walks and edging materials were replace in almost all the pits at the Club's facilities. Jack Craw and Dave Thrun, the Club's Maintenance officers, have headed up the major overhaul that involved several club members at work sessions.

Tom Williams met with the Officers and club team captains on April 13 to develop the final plans for the 2010 Summer League Season. The new league schedule and team rosters will be posted in a few days. The Summer League will open on Tuesday, May 11 with the usual 6:00 p.m. starting time, according to Tom.

TOM WILLIAMS PLACES FIFTH IN WORLD TOURNAMENT

Did your miss the Mike Pryson sports page article in the Jackson Patriot about Tom's World Tournament placing? Well if you did here a few excerpts for the article: "Williams, a 40- year -old horseshoe pitching whiz from Cement City who lives in Albion, finished fifth last month (July) in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Tournament in York, Pa. It was William's first trip to the world meet in nearly two decades."  "....Tom Williams has won 11 state championships, including the last three and seven of the last eight. He will go for another state crown on Labor Day Labor Day weekend in Kalamazoo." Alan Francis won the title with a 19-0 record in the round-robin that included a shocking 89.83 ringer percentage."  "....Williams, who finished one place ahead of former World champion, Walter Ray Williams Jr., was the only pitcher from Michigan to make the men's final Round." A great story about a local horseshoe pitching icon.  Congratulations Tom , a well deserved citation!

A BIT OF NHPA HISTORY

IN 1989, PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH AND BARBARA BUSH INVITED SEVERAL NHPA PITCHERS  TO THE WHITE HOUSE TO CHRISTEN HIS NEW HORSESHOE COURT.  ELEVEN NHPA MEMBERS, INCLUDING DAVE LOUCKS,  PRESIDENT AND SECRETARY-TREASURER, DONNIE ROBERTS WERE INVITED.  THE PHOTOS BELOW SHOW A BIT OF NHPA HISTORY THAT MOST LIKELY WON'T BE REPEATED SOON. THE COURTS WERE REMOVED FROM THE WHITE HOUSE DURING THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. MANY DIGNITARIES WERE ALSO PRESENT INCLUDING SEVERAL GOVERNORS AND WASHINGTON GOVERNMENTAL LEADERS.
